General AI and Legal AI
ChatGPT vs LawGPT: General AI vs Structured Legal Workflows
General-purpose AI systems such as ChatGPT are designed to handle a broad range of conversational and knowledge tasks. LawGPT is designed around structured legal workflows for Indian legal use cases. They are different products with different jobs, not a ranking of which AI is “smarter.”
What is the difference between ChatGPT and LawGPT?
ChatGPT is a general-purpose conversational assistant. You prompt it; it replies. That is valuable for explaining ideas, drafting language, and exploring options in plain words.
LawGPT is a Legal AI platform for India. You select a workflow, answer guided questions, and the product keeps matter state: research context, drafts, uploads, optional lawyer review, and a downloadable package. The interaction model is a case path, not an open chat about anything.
Neither description is an attack on the other product. Many people will use a general assistant for thinking and a legal workflow product when they are ready to structure a specific Indian matter.
How the products differ in practice
The table below records differences in design, not a scorecard of quality. Empty or “not the primary design” does not mean a general-purpose assistant is unable to discuss law. It means that capability is not the product’s organising idea.
| Dimension | General-purpose AI (e.g. ChatGPT) | LawGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Broad conversation and knowledge tasks across many domains | Structured legal workflows for launched Indian legal problems |
| Interaction model | Open-ended prompts and replies | Guided intake inside a selected workflow |
| Legal workflow | You must drive the next step in the conversation | Productized stages from questions toward a package |
| Structured intake | Depends on what you remember to paste | Questions designed for the matter type |
| Documents | Can draft text when asked; no default matter file | Lawyer-grade drafts tied to the workflow and stored in the case |
| Research | Prompt-dependent; may or may not retrieve sources depending on the product mode | Research context presented beside the matter in the workspace |
| Case progression | Thread history, if you keep the chat | Matter workspace with phases and stored outputs |
| Human review | You copy output to a lawyer yourself | Optional Lawyer Review+ on selected materials |
| Filing preparation | Not organised as a filing package by default | Downloadable package of drafts and supporting materials |
When should I use ChatGPT?
Use a general-purpose assistant when you want to think out loud: understand a concept, rephrase a paragraph, outline options, or learn vocabulary before you open a matter. It is also useful when the question is not yet a LawGPT workflow.
Keep client-identifying files out of any tool until you have read that tool’s privacy terms. A public chat is a poor place for a full brief.
When should I use LawGPT?
Use LawGPT when you have (or are close to) a launched Indian matter: wrongful termination, a consumer dispute, cheque bounce, police refusing an FIR, or drunk driving, among product paths listed on workflows.
Use it when you want guided questions, drafts that stay with the case, optional lawyer review, and a package you can download—rather than rebuilding the story in a new prompt each time.
Accuracy, privacy and professional use
Both general-purpose AI and Legal AI can produce fluent mistakes. Verify facts and legal propositions. LawGPT does not claim guaranteed accuracy. ChatGPT’s own product terms and safety documentation speak for that product; this page does not audit them.
LawGPT stores matter materials in a product workspace. For either tool, you remain responsible for confidentiality and for what you send or file. See the disclaimer and platform security.
Using both without confusion
A reasonable split is: general AI for exploration; LawGPT for execution of a supported workflow. Do not assume that a paragraph drafted in a chatbot is the same artefact as a workflow-generated notice with stored facts.
If you are choosing tools as a lawyer, AI tools for lawyers in India has an evaluation framework that applies to any vendor, including LawGPT.
